OneThird

OneThird from Enschede can 'see' how long fruits and vegetables remain fresh with its optical technology.

Reducing Food Waste One-third of food is wasted! One-third of the food we produce annually doesn't make it to consumers' plates. The Netherlands aims to reduce annual food waste by 1 million tons by 2030.

Getting fresh products from growers to retailers on time requires complex logistics, especially since quality varies by season and environmental factors like weather. With OneThird's scanner technology, stakeholders in the supply chain can 'see' inside fruits and vegetables, gaining insights into internal quality. By combining this data with external camera images and other relevant information, artificial intelligence accurately determines product quality. This provides valuable information not only on shelf life but also on taste and ripeness.

Avocados and Strawberries "With our unique predictive technology, quality inspectors throughout the food chain can quickly receive objective feedback on the shelf life and other quality parameters of fresh products like avocados and strawberries," explains Marco Snikkers, founder of OneThird. Lack of accurate information on the shelf life of fresh products leads to unnecessary surprises in the supply chain and can result in negative consumer experiences and waste. "With precise and real-time information on product quality, stakeholders in the food chain can make better decisions on where to transport products and at what price, reducing food waste before it reaches consumers."

OneThird is located at Kennispark Twente, with East NL as one of its shareholders.
